The Texas DPS approved course is not a HOW TO SHOOT class.
LTC classes are comprised of classroom and range qualification portions as required by the State of Texas. The classroom covers necessary State and Federal Laws pertaining to the right to carry a handgun in Texas. The following topics and more are covered in this class:
You MUST already know how to load, safely handle, aim, fire and work through a malfunction of your handgun for the proficiency qualification. You can use any handgun from a .22 up to a 45. You are allowed to shoot a revolver or semi-automatic firearm. Once the proficiency exam begins, Instructors are not allowed to assist the shooter.
You are not required to take the shooting portion on the same day as the class. You can still take the class portion and begin your application with DPS. You can then schedule your shooting portion at a later date once you've had some training but may be subject to a range fee if not completed on the same day. You have 3 attempts on the proficiency exam to pass.
There are ABSOLUTELY NO LOADED FIREARMS in the classroom portion. This is for the safety of the entire class as well as the instructor.
The proficiency qualification consists of 50 rounds shot and timed. 20 from the 3-yard line, 20 from the 7-yard line and 10 from the 15-yard line. You must score 175 of a possible 250 to pass. You have 3 chances. Not all instructors will allow you to shoot more than once at the time of class.
You will need to provide the instructor with your current Driver's license or ID Card at the beginning of class.
If you are not sure of your shooting abilities, please call me to set up a private instruction lesson.

If you do not have a firearm, the instructor will provide a firearm (.22 caliber) for your lesson.
